Asantehene Receives News of Ashanti Regional Chief Imam’s Passing

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been formally notified of the death of Sheik Abdul Mumin Haroun, the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, who was also known as Asantehene Kramo.

Sheik Haroun, who passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, was confirmed dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after being rushed there following a brief illness that night. In keeping with Islamic customs, he was laid to rest the following day.

On December 19, 2024, a delegation led by Baffour Asabere Ababio Kogyawoasu, the Otumfuo Sumankwaahene, visited the King to inform him of the Imam’s passing. The delegation, which included Mr. Mohammed Issah, the Deputy Asantehene Kramo; Mr. Mohammed Abdul, an Imam; Alhaji Ishmael Abdellah, the late Imam’s Personal Secretary; and Alhaji Dauda Abubakari, the senior brother of the deceased, also presented a kola nut to the King as part of the tradition.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed his condolences to the delegation, offering his full support during this difficult time.

Sheik Abdul Mumin Haroun was a prominent figure in the region, especially for his role in leading the Muslim Peace and Reconciliation Committee during the 2024 General Elections. Throughout the year, the Committee conducted various community engagements, with a focus on promoting peace. In the days leading up to the election, the Committee specifically engaged with young people in Islamic Senior High Schools, educating them on peace as guided by their faith.
