Driver Arrested for Stealing GH¢50,000 from Former Employer’s Vehicle

A 36-year-old driver, Emmanuel Klutse, has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly breaking into his former boss’ vehicle and stealing GH¢50,000. Klutse, who was captured on CCTV footage opening the complainant’s car and stealing the money, pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing.

The court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, granted Klutse bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties who must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court. The prosecution was ordered to comply with the rules of disclosure, and the matter was adjourned to February 12, 2025.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey, the complainant, Theress Rusell Panford, a Procurement Officer at Kasapreko Company Limited, had withdrawn GH¢60,000 from his bank on December 4, 2024, and kept GH¢50,000 in his car, which he parked at the company’s car park at Spintex.

When the complainant returned to his car at about 4:30 pm, he discovered that the money was missing. A review of the CCTV footage revealed that Klutse had followed the complainant to the car park and had stolen the money from his car. The footage showed Klutse opening the complainant’s car door, picking up the money, and fleeing the scene in his Toyota Highlander.

A formal complaint was lodged with the police, and Klutse was arrested the following day. During questioning, Klutse admitted to the crime and confessed that he had committed it with two other accomplices who were still at large. He claimed to have shared the stolen money with his accomplices and had used GH¢15,000 of his share to settle a debt.

The prosecution revealed that Klutse had been employed by the complainant as his personal driver for seven years but had parted ways with him. It was discovered that Klutse had taken the spare key to the complainant’s car and used it to gain access to the vehicle and steal the money.
