Asanteman to Celebrate Odwira Festival Next Year

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has announced that the Odwira Festival will be observed by Asanteman for the first time in several decades next year. The traditional event, along with its associated rites, will take place in September, coinciding with the yam harvest.

The announcement was made during the latest Asanteman Council meeting on December 16, 2024.

“We will observe Odwira Festival next year. In September when yam will be harvested, this festival is observed. Let Tuobodom, Ofuman, Menye bring their yam. Akyeamfour must prepare Dwirahene for the event. Agona will have to find us a representative from today,” Otumfuo stated.

The Asantehene also mentioned that as part of the festival, he would visit several towns, including Asokore Mampong, Esereso, and Asaamang, to carry out the necessary rites.

The revival of the Odwira Festival, according to Otumfuo, is an important step in restoring the spirit of Asanteman, especially in the face of growing challenges. He emphasized the significance of the festival in strengthening the unity of the people of Asanteman.

“All this will be used to revive the spirit of Asanteman. So long as the Golden Stool abides, no matter what lip rises against us, it will be in vain. Let anyone who wants try. Let us believe in Asanteman. I pray for strength and life for you all so we work together for the betterment of Asanteman,” Otumfuo said.

The announcement of the festival’s revival has been met with enthusiasm, as it marks a significant cultural event for the Asante Kingdom, one that will undoubtedly bring the community together to celebrate their heritage and traditions.
