The statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi, has sustained partial damage, sparking fresh controversy.
On Monday, December 16, 2024, a noticeable gaping hole was observed in the back of one of the statue’s legs, prompting questions regarding the cause of the damage. While authorities have not yet provided an official statement, there is speculation that the damage could be the result of vandalism. This theory is fueled by prior threats from certain individuals who had previously expressed their intent to pull down the monument. Others suggest that the damage may be linked to structural flaws in the statue.
The statue, unveiled by President Akufo-Addo during his tour of the Western Region ahead of the 2024 general elections, was meant to commemorate significant projects initiated during his administration. These include the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of the 3-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle.
However, since its installation, the statue has been a focal point of controversy. Many local residents have criticized the monument, questioning its relevance and arguing that the funds allocated for its creation could have been better used to address more urgent local issues, such as improving the healthcare infrastructure at the hospital itself.
In the lead-up to this incident, various factions within the community had voiced their disapproval of the statue. Some had even threatened to destroy it, labeling it a symbol of misplaced priorities.
