Over 600 Workers Halt Work on Ofankor-Nsawam Road Project Over Unpaid Salaries

Over 600 casual workers involved in the rehabilitation of the Ofankor to Nsawam road have downed tools, demanding immediate payment of their three months’ salary arrears. The workers, who have brought the project to a standstill, are insisting that their employers settle the outstanding wages without delay.

The workers’ action has caused significant disruption for commuters who rely on the road, which is part of the government’s effort to dualize the entire Accra-Kumasi road. According to the leader of the agitated workers, Anefi Andor, the non-payment of their salaries has made their situation unbearable.

“We were told the project was closed without any prior notice,” Mr. Andor told Citi News. “They moved all the necessary materials to the yard and chose only a few people to continue working, while the rest of us were sent home.”

Mr. Andor described the hardship faced by him and his colleagues, saying, “Until now, they haven’t decided to pay us. They keep claiming they don’t have money, and with the Christmas festivities approaching, it’s getting harder for us. We left our families to come here, and they’ve been calling us, but we have no money.”

He added, “They eat three meals a day, but we were kept in a workers’ house, starving for about three weeks. So, we’re here to demand what’s rightfully ours.” The workers are demanding that their employers take immediate action to address their concerns and pay them their outstanding salaries.
