The United States has extended its congratulations to President-elect John Mahama following his successful campaign in the December 7 general elections, as declared by the Electoral Commission.

In a statement issued by US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, the U.S. also commended Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who made history as Ghana’s first female vice president-elect.

The statement praised the Electoral Commission (EC), civil society, and Ghana’s security services for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process.

The U.S. also acknowledged the gracious acceptance of the election results by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

While recognizing the largely peaceful nature of the elections, the U.S. expressed concern over isolated incidents of violence that led to some fatalities. The statement extended condolences to the affected families and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.

Secretary Blinken reiterated the United States’ commitment to strengthening its partnership with Ghana and expressed optimism about collaborating with President-elect Mahama and his administration to advance mutual interests and further deepen bilateral relations.
