Ghana’s political landscape has witnessed a significant shift with John Dumelo’s victory as the new Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In an exclusive interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Dumelo shared his thoughts on his successful campaign, expressing confidence in the electorate’s support.
Dumelo reflected on his opponent’s tactics during the election, citing the sharing of rice, oil, money, and whispering to voters in queue. “It was at that point I knew she’s lost the election from onset. If you know you’ve worked, if you know you’ve been a good MP, whatever, and deserve another term, why are you sharing food and money and rice and oil, and of course clearly it backfired,” he said, referring to New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s alleged tactics.
Dumelo’s comments not only highlight his campaign’s strategy and engagement with grassroots supporters but also shed light on the contentious tactics sometimes employed in Ghanaian politics. As he prepares to take on his new role in parliament, Dumelo emphasized his commitment to serving the constituents of Ayawaso West and not repeating past mistakes made by other MPs. “I don’t want to be the kind of MP that will disappear and election time I’ll come around sharing rice,” he stated.
