The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed grave concern over the violence and unrest that has followed the 2024 general elections, urging an end to the turmoil that has disrupted peace across the nation.
In a strongly worded statement, the Bishops condemned the violence, rioting, and looting that have claimed lives, damaged property, and deepened divisions among Ghanaians.
“These actions are unacceptable and contradict the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, hold dear,” the statement read.
The Conference called for an immediate halt to all violent activities, urging Ghanaians to uphold the peace that has long been the foundation of the country’s democratic journey. They emphasized that resorting to violence and destruction to express political disagreement undermines democracy and disproportionately impacts the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
The Bishops also appealed to political leaders to take responsible action during this volatile period. They called on leaders to denounce unlawful behavior by their supporters and actively promote peace and adherence to the rule of law.
“Your role as leaders extends beyond seeking power it entails guiding your followers with wisdom, fostering peace, and ensuring the well-being of every Ghanaian,” the statement stated.
The Bishops also turned their attention to the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, urging them to maintain professionalism and vigilance as they respond to the unrest. They called for decisive action against individuals involved in the violence, regardless of their political affiliations, while ensuring fairness and prioritizing the protection of lives and property.
“Justice must prevail,” the Bishops stressed.
In their call for unity, the Catholic Bishops appealed to religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the general public to work together in restoring peace and national cohesion. They underscored the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and unity in resolving differences and moving forward as a united nation.
“May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing in the aftermath of these turbulent events,” the Bishops concluded, expressing hope that through collective effort, the country will emerge stronger and more united.
