“Mahama Will Ensure Black Stars Qualify for 2026 World Cup” – Abdul-Salam

Adams Abdul-Salam, the Member of Parliament for New Edubiase, has promised that the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration will prioritize the qualification of the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This assurance follows the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections, with John Dramani Mahama declared the president-elect. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Abdul-Salam acknowledged the national team’s recent struggles, particularly their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they finished last in Group F with only three points.

Despite these setbacks, Abdul-Salam expressed confidence that the new NDC administration would revitalize Ghana’s football efforts. “President-elect, John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government are determined to ensure the Black Stars will qualify for the 2026 World Cup,” he stated.

He continued, “We did not qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament but will work closely with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) by providing them with the needed logistics to ensure the team gets qualification. It is our biggest objective to ensure the Black Stars qualify for the tournament.”

The Black Stars are currently in second place in Group I of the World Cup qualifiers, tied on nine points with Comoros. Their campaign is set to continue in March 2025 with crucial matches against Chad and Madagascar.

Abdul-Salam also emphasized that the completion of the long-delayed New Edubiase Sports Stadium would be a priority for the Mahama-led government. He revealed that during the campaign, John Dramani Mahama visited his constituency and made the completion of the stadium one of his key promises.

“During the campaign, John Mahama came to my constituency and tabled before him four demands, and one key thing is the New Edubiase Sports Stadium. The previous NDC administration started it, but the NPP deliberately did not complete it. Myself, together with John Mahama, will ensure the stadium will be completed,” Abdul-Salam assured.
