Vice President-elect Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed her commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowerment following the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 presidential election.
In her remarks after Mahama’s victory, Opoku-Agyemang emphasized her dedication to paving the way for others to succeed in her groundbreaking role as Ghana’s first female Vice President. She stated that her election was not about personal recognition but about creating opportunities for all Ghanaians.
“I know this is a big responsibility, and I don’t intend to travel the journey by myself. You are all part of it. NDC is an inclusive party, and we are demonstrating it in many ways,” she said.
She added, “My job was to open the door and it does not end there, actually, that is where the work begins. I will hold the door open. The method of hope of opening the door, the method of holding the door open so others wish to travel that door is what I’m implying. It is not a self-aggrandizing position. It is a position that empowers others.”
Opoku-Agyemang further highlighted the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) commitment to breaking barriers and ensuring that others, particularly women, are empowered to follow in her footsteps. She stressed the importance of gender inclusivity in the nation’s development.
“This country is not going to be built only by half the gender. Whether we are in the public space or not, the roles we play are significant. As the NDC, we have accepted the responsibility to facilitate this process,” she noted.
In her closing remarks, the Vice President-elect called on all Ghanaians to contribute to improving the lives of marginalized individuals and those overlooked by society, reinforcing the need for collective effort toward the nation’s progress.
