John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that he will only accept the results of the upcoming December 7 general election if the process is transparent and credible.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Mahama expressed concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, as Ghanaians prepare to head to the polls. He emphasized that he would reject any election outcome marred by violence or irregularities.
The former president highlighted the critical role of a fair and free electoral process in ensuring the success of democracy. He stressed that for democracy to thrive, the integrity of the electoral process must be protected.
Mahama also pointed out that any actions undermining the credibility of the election would make it difficult for him to accept the results. He specifically referenced concerns about ballot snatching, voter intimidation, and the involvement of security forces in disrupting the process as serious threats to the election’s credibility.
“If on election day, there is widespread ballot snatching, beating of people, the military moving in and intimidating people, and thugs rampaging, you want me to accept that result? It will depend on the transparency and fairness of the process,” Mahama said.
