Three children, aged 4, 10, and 16, have been arrested after CCTV footage revealed their involvement in a theft at a popular supermarket in Takoradi, where they made off with GH₵35,000 in cash.

According to reports, the 16-year-old is a first-year student at a Senior High School (SHS) in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. The theft occurred when the children entered the supermarket under the guise of buying ice cream.

CCTV footage captured the chilling details of how the children executed the theft. The 10-year-old, noticing that one of the cashiers had taken a break, seized the opportunity to steal money from the cash register where the day’s sales were kept. After filling his pockets with the cash, the children went outside to retrieve a rubber bag, which they then filled with the stolen money before fleeing the scene.

Mr. Kwaku Tando, a supplier who regularly provides goods to the supermarket, explained how he discovered the theft. “I noticed one of the cashiers looked worried, so I decided to find out what was wrong. She informed me that about GH₵35,000 was missing from her sales. I reviewed the CCTV footage and saw three children in school uniforms entering the shop,” he said.

He continued, “The 10-year-old went straight to the area where the sales were kept and started looting while his siblings pretended to be buying ice cream. He filled his pockets, went out to get a rubber bag, and looted everything before fleeing with his siblings.”

Although the supermarket’s manager confirmed the incident to Connect FM, they declined to comment on the record.

Mr. Tando said that after recognizing the school crest on the children’s uniforms, he visited the SHS where the 16-year-old attends and identified the teenager. “After interrogations, she led me to the school her siblings attended, where they all confessed to stealing the money from the supermarket,” he added.

The children confessed to handing the stolen money to their mother, who was subsequently arrested. GH₵31,000 of the stolen funds have been recovered, with the remainder still outstanding. The police are currently investigating the case.

Following the incident, the supermarket has implemented additional security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
