The Ministry of Education’s National Resolution Centre, established to assist Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates facing issues with their Senior High School (SHS) placements, has successfully resolved 90% of the complaints it has received so far.
Nana Afrah Sika Mensah, Deputy Coordinator of the Free SHS Secretariat, shared this update with Graphic Online during a visit to the centre at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall in Accra on Monday. According to Mensah, the centre has addressed a range of issues, including placing candidates who were initially unassigned to schools, as well as facilitating requests for changes of schools.
“Over the course of this exercise, we have resolved about 90% of the issues brought to us,” Mensah said. “These include placing candidates who were left out of the initial placement list and helping those who wanted to change schools.” She added that personnel from the Free SHS Secretariat continue to work to resolve any remaining issues promptly.
The Resolution Centre, which opened last Monday, has become a crucial resource for parents and candidates needing assistance with the SHS placement process. The centre handles a variety of concerns, including requests for self-placement, school transfers, changes in residential status (boarding or day school), and alterations to academic programs.
Parents and guardians have been visiting the centre in large numbers, seeking immediate support for their children. To maintain order, a police presence has been stationed at the facility, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for those seeking assistance.
“We are here to guide the parents and children through the process and help them understand how to resolve their issues effectively,” said Nana Mensah. She also commended the cooperation of the parents and candidates who have visited the centre, noting that the placement process has generally run smoothly.
“Thankfully, the exercise has been successful. We are grateful for the cooperation from both the parents and the candidates in addressing their concerns,” she added.
Over the weekend, several issues were resolved, and the Free SHS Secretariat remains committed to ensuring that all cases are handled in a timely manner. “We will make sure that all issues brought here are addressed accordingly,” Mensah assured, stressing that no candidate would be left behind.
In addition to placement concerns, the centre has also been working on issues related to gender, non-placement, and residential status. Nana Mensah emphasized that all such concerns are being actively addressed and urged parents and candidates to remain patient as the process continues.
“We want to assure everyone that no candidate will be left out. All issues will be addressed, and every student will be placed in a school,” she said.
