Speaker Bagbin to Recall Parliament in Early November
- Ghana's Parliament to Reconvene in Early November
- Bagbin Leads Delegation to CPA International Conference
- Supreme Court to Rule on Vacant Seats on Nov 11
The Office of the Speaker of Parliament is working towards recalling the House in early November. This follows a petition by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus to reconvene the meeting to address urgent matters.
Speaker Bagbin informed a five-member delegation of the Council of State, led by Chairman Nana Otuo Siriboe II, that processes to recall the House had begun. The delegation visited the Speaker to discuss recent developments leading to the indefinite adjournment.
After deliberations, Council members assured the Speaker of their support in resolving any impasse to facilitate the House’s recall. Speaker Bagbin briefed the delegation on the situation and reiterated his commitment to Ghana’s democracy.
However, the Speaker will lead a Ghanaian delegation to the 67th Conference of the CPA International in Sydney, Australia, from November 3-8. He plans to return earlier than scheduled due to MPs’ requests to recall Parliament.
The Council commended Speaker Bagbin’s efforts in maintaining Ghana’s democratic credentials. Nana Otuo Siriboe encouraged him to continue his good work.
Recently, Speaker Bagbin was re-elected as President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures.
The Parliamentary proceedings were suspended indefinitely on October 22 due to a legal battle over Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four seats vacant. The affected members are Andrew Asiamah Amoako, Cynthia, Kwadjo Asante, and Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah.
The Supreme Court directed Speaker Bagbin to stay his ruling, and the court refused to overturn its decision on October 30. Judgment on the substantive application is set for November 11.
