Court Sentences Man to 15 Years for Armed Robbery of Taxi Driver

An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Judge Susana Eduful, has sentenced Yaw Mensah, alias “Red,” to 15 years in prison for robbing a taxi driver at gunpoint.

Mensah, 42, was found guilty after a full trial, despite maintaining his innocence. “God knows my heart that I did not commit the crime. But if the court thinks I am guilty, I thank the court,” Mensah said before his sentencing.

According to Chief Inspector Teye Okuffo, prosecuting, the incident occurred on September 6, 2023. Mensah hired the taxi driver at Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, destined for Sabon-Zongo Market. Upon reaching Ayigbe Town, Mensah produced a pistol, threatening the driver, and violently assaulted him before fleeing with the vehicle to Agbogbloshie Market.

Investigations by the National Police Intelligence Directorate led to Mensah’s arrest on September 8, 2023. During questioning, Mensah admitted to engaging the taxi driver at Korle Bu Traffic Light and committing the offense.

The prosecution revealed that Mensah and an accomplice, still at large, had committed multiple robberies in the Greater Accra Region. Further investigations are ongoing.

The court’s verdict brings closure to the victim, with Mensah now facing 15 years behind bars for his crimes.
