A Philadelphia court has ordered Elon Musk and all parties involved to attend a hearing on Thursday regarding a lawsuit filed by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. The lawsuit seeks to halt America PAC, a political action committee controlled by Musk, from awarding $1 million to registered U.S. voters in battleground states ahead of the November 5 election.

The District Attorney’s Office filed the lawsuit on Monday, describing the giveaway as an “illegal lottery” that entices Pennsylvania residents to share personal data. According to a judge’s order on Wednesday, “all parties must be present at the time of the hearing.”

The hearing, initially scheduled for Friday, has been rescheduled to Thursday morning. A representative for America PAC, which supports Republican former President Donald Trump, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Musk’s representatives have also not responded.

Musk promised to give $1 million daily to individuals who sign his online free-speech and gun-rights petition. However, legal experts are divided on whether this violates federal laws prohibiting payment or offers to pay individuals to register to vote.

The Justice Department sent a warning letter to America PAC, stating that Musk’s giveaways may breach federal law, CNN reported last week. The Trump campaign relies heavily on outside groups for voter canvassing, making America PAC, founded by Musk, a crucial player in the upcoming election.

Trump faces Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in what polls show to be a tight presidential race. The outcome of the hearing may significantly impact the election’s dynamics, particularly in battleground states.
