Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has announced the immediate closure of seven courts, in response to escalating violence in the Bawku township and surrounding areas. The affected courts include the High Court, Bolgatanga; Circuit Court, Bolgatanga; District Courts in Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.

This decision follows a surge in unrest linked to the controversial enskinment of Seidu Abagre as Bawku Naba in February 2023. In a statement released on Tuesday, October 29, the Judicial Secretary emphasized the necessity of this action, citing the need to protect the safety and security of judges, staff, lawyers, and court users. “In order to ensure the safety and security of Judges, Staff, Lawyers and Court Users, the Honourable Lady Chief Justice has ordered the closure of the following courts with immediate effect, until further notice,” the statement read.

Additionally, the statement instructed registrars to safeguard all court assets and advised all staff members to prioritize their safety.
