An Accra High Court has formally charged Pearl Agbomadzi, a 20-year-old interior decorator, with murder in connection with the death of John Scott Hughes, a 74-year-old British national residing in Ghana.
According to the prosecution, Mr. Hughes had invited Ms. Agbomadzi to meet him at American House before taking her to Philipo’s Movie House, a well-known venue in East Legon, where he secured a room for the two.
The prosecution’s narrative indicates that Mr. Hughes and Ms. Agbomadzi, described as his girlfriend, watched pornography together and engaged in a consensual sexual encounter. During this activity, Mr. Hughes reportedly lost consciousness and collapsed on the floor, prompting Ms. Agbomadzi to panic.
In a state of distress, she hurried to the reception area to seek help, informing the staff about Mr. Hughes’ condition. Emergency services were alerted, and he was subsequently transported to Legon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The complainant in this case is the wife of the deceased.
On October 24, John Baptist Ayedze, the legal counsel for Ms. Agbomadzi, requested bail for his client, who has been in police custody since the incident. The prosecution, represented by Assistant State Attorney Frederick Adu Gyamfi, did not contest the bail application.
Presiding Judge Lydia Osei Marfo granted bail set at GHS100,000 with a surety. In her closing remarks, she advised older men to exercise caution in their sexual relationships, suggesting that pursuing younger partners can present risks due to the significant age difference.
