“We Need to Stand Together” – Uncle Ato Calls for Action on Galamsey

Story Highlights
  • Uncle Ato blasts galamsey's impact
  • Proposes temporary mining ban
  • Calls for collective action

Renowned gospel artist Uncle Ato has raised alarm over the escalating issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, in Ghana. In an interview on 3FM Drive on October 15, 2024, he highlighted the detrimental effects of galamsey on the environment and public health, urging for immediate intervention.

Having been born in Tarkwa a region historically affected by galamsey Uncle Ato expressed deep concern over the worsening situation. “It’s a no no. We need to stand together because our water bodies, our trees, our lives are in danger,” he emphasized.

He pointed out the alarming health risks associated with galamsey, noting that “people are afraid to eat the head of the fish because that’s where mercury accumulates.” This, he argues, necessitates urgent action to address the issue.

Uncle Ato proposed a solution reminiscent of fishing regulations, suggesting that similar measures could be implemented in the mining sector. He believes a temporary suspension of mining activities is essential for protecting the ecosystem and securing a sustainable future for the community.

“I remember how we are able to put a ban on fishing for a while. Initially, it was difficult, but we benefitted,” he recalled. “I think the mining area needs such…for some time to save our lives and our future. It’s a serious issue,” he concluded.
