Public Services Workers Union to Initiate Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Allowances
- Ghana public sector union strikes
- Demands for special allowances unmet
- Negotiations disrupted
The Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) is set to commence an indefinite strike today, Monday, October 21, 2024, following the government’s failure to address their demands for institution-specific allowances. This decision comes after multiple attempts at resolution were unsuccessful.
The PSWU has voiced its frustration over the government’s refusal to honor these allowances, which they argue have exacerbated the financial strain on public service workers. The Union is advocating for allowances that accurately reflect the unique challenges faced by its members in various institutions.
In response to the impending strike, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has called on the PSWU to reconsider its decision, cautioning that the strike could disrupt ongoing negotiations. On Thursday, October 17, the FWSC stressed that the continuation of negotiations would become increasingly difficult if the union proceeds with industrial action.
Additionally, the PSWU has raised concerns about delays in implementing recommendations from a nine-member committee established in 2022 to review the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP). The committee’s recommendations, aimed at resolving compensation issues in the public sector, remain unaddressed, further motivating the union’s decision to strike.
The FWSC reiterated its commitment to ongoing negotiations in its October 17 statement but highlighted that the strike would hinder progress. Furthermore, the FWSC pointed out that the planned strike violates the rules of engagement and the Labour Act, Act 651, which was signed by both parties.
