Hairstylist Jailed Five Years for GH¢139,000 Recruitment Scam

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced hairstylist Adwoa Nyarko to five years in prison for her involvement in a recruitment scam amounting to GH¢139,000. Nyarko was found guilty on four counts of conspiracy to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretences.

During the trial, which took place under the oversight of Mrs. Ellen Ofei Ayeh, it was revealed that Nyarko’s accomplices, Nana Osei and Charles Kwame Damoah, remain at large.

Prosecuting the case, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackon informed the court that Nyarko is a resident of Wenchi. He recounted that in September 2021, complainants Nana Yaw Barimah and Collins Atta Oteng approached the police to report a recruitment scam.

According to the prosecution, in 2020, Nyarko and her accomplices solicited GH¢39,000 from the complainants, assuring them they would secure employment for their relatives at the Ghana Revenue Authority. However, they failed to fulfill this promise.

After the complaint was lodged, police investigations led to Nyarko’s arrest in Asankare, Ashanti Region. During questioning, she admitted to accepting money from the complainants to help secure jobs for residents of Asante-Akyem.

ASP Ackon further stated that Nyarko had given the money to her accomplices, Osei and Damoah, who are currently evading capture. Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend them to assist with ongoing investigations.
