Daniel Craig’s latest film, “Queer,” has premiered at the London Film Festival, featuring the James Bond star in the role of a gay man set in 1950s Mexico. This marks a new chapter for Craig following his final Bond film, “No Time To Die,” released in 2021.
The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is based on William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel and follows Lee (Craig) as he falls for Eugene Allerton, a young US Navy serviceman played by Drew Starkey. Critics have offered mixed reviews, with some calling it “incoherent” while others have praised it with five-star ratings.
Despite Craig’s absence at the UK premiere due to illness, director Guadagnino and Starkey attended the red carpet event at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The film has garnered attention for its bold storytelling; the second half diverges into surreal territory as Lee seeks a telepathic plant in Ecuador.
Discussing the film, Craig stated, “It is about love, but it’s about loss, it’s about loneliness, it’s about yearning, it’s about all of these things.”
While some critics expressed disappointment, noting the film’s lack of coherence and applause at press screenings, others found it to be a profound exploration of male loneliness. The Telegraph awarded it five stars, calling it a “beautiful film,” while Coollider praised Craig’s captivating performance.
“Queer” is set for UK release on November 27.
