- Fought against medical advice in past bouts
Liam Williams, a world title challenger and one of Wales’ top boxers of the past two decades, has announced his retirement from the sport, citing concerns over the impact of repeated concussions.
The 32-year-old, who has secured British, European, and Commonwealth titles, made the decision due to worries about sustaining further head injuries and the potential damage to his brain.
Reflecting on his career, Williams revealed that he fought Chris Eubank Jr. in 2022 despite being aware of the effects of a concussion and going against medical advice. “I didn’t want to let down my fans,” he explained.
After his last bout, which ended in a first-round knockout defeat by Hamzah Sheeraz in February, Williams recognized that he “had taken too much.” He expressed a desire to avoid fighting “just for money” and to prioritize the future of his family.
Williams also shared his concerns about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a serious brain condition associated with repeated head trauma and concussions. The condition, which can lead to dementia and worsens over time, can only be diagnosed post-mortem. “I know that boxing is brutal,” he added, emphasizing the seriousness of his decision.
