Story Highlights
  • Oliver Barker-Vormawor granted ¢20,000 bail
  • Faces charges: stealing, unlawful assembly, assault
  • Continues anti-galamsey fight despite legal challenges

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convenor of the anti-galamsey protest organized by the Democracy Hub, has been granted bail in the sum of ¢20,000. This development comes after three previous unsuccessful attempts to secure bail following his arrest during protests against illegal mining activities.

Barker-Vormawor, a prominent activist, was arrested on September 23, 2024, along with 52 others, during a Democracy Hub protest. He faces multiple charges, including stealing, unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault on a public officer, and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.

Initially, the Accra Circuit Court denied his bail request, and the High Court also remanded him, citing concerns over potential reoffending due to an existing treason felony charge. However, the judge warned that bail would be granted if the prosecution failed to commence the trial promptly.

After repeated bail applications, the High Court granted Barker-Vormawor bail under the condition that he reports to the police twice a week. Police reports allege that Barker-Vormawor engaged in unlawful activities during the protest, including removing keys from a police van.

Despite facing significant legal challenges and multiple arrests, Barker-Vormawor remains committed to combating illegal mining. He advocates for comprehensive environmental reforms and demands greater government accountability.
