Kylian Mbappe’s dispute with former club Paris Saint-Germain over €55 million ($60M) in unpaid wages and bonuses will be addressed by a French league committee on Tuesday.

A hearing regarding Kylian Mbappe’s €55 million ($60M) dispute with Paris Saint-Germain over unpaid wages and bonuses is set to take place on Tuesday, just a day after Swedish media linked the France captain to a rape investigation. Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet first reported the rape allegation without naming the accused, but another outlet, Expressen, later claimed Mbappe was the suspect.

Mbappe’s camp, when contacted by AFP, said they had no knowledge of any legal complaint against him. Meanwhile, Mbappe took to social media, calling the report “fake news” and implying it was linked to his ongoing dispute with PSG. In his post on X, the player hinted that the timing of the Swedish report was suspicious, coinciding with the eve of his hearing over the financial conflict with PSG.

The French football league (LFP) had previously ordered PSG to pay Mbappe the €55 million he claims he is owed, which includes unpaid wages and bonuses from last season. PSG was given a week to comply with the order, but the club appealed the decision. Mbappe’s claim centers on the last third of a signing-on fee, amounting to €36 million, as well as his salary for the final three months of the season and an ethics bonus.

The case will be heard by a committee made up of two members of the French national players’ union, a magistrate, and an independent president. The committee can either confirm or overturn the LFP’s order. If the decision is overturned, the case could either return for a new ruling or be reexamined by a legal committee. It may take several days before the committee’s final conclusions are made public.

The origins of this financial dispute trace back to August 2023, when Mbappe was excluded from the PSG squad for refusing to extend his contract. By declining an extension, Mbappe allowed himself to leave for Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of last season, a move that meant PSG lost out on a potential transfer fee. Under an agreement reached with PSG at the time, Mbappe agreed to forgo the €55 million in bonuses if he left for free.

However, Mbappe’s representatives now contest the validity of that agreement, referring to it as a “hidden agreement.” They argue that the player is still entitled to the unpaid sums, which have become the focus of the current dispute with his former club.
