Ghanaian gospel artist Empress Gifty Adorye has taken a bold stance against the stigma surrounding divorce, declaring it a natural phase of life rather than a curse. This assertion comes in the wake of her own divorce from Prophet Elisha Osei, with whom she was married for over a decade. Empress Gifty is now happily married to Hopeson Adorye, a former dedicated member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an interview on Channel One TV’s entertainment and lifestyle show, Upside Down, co-hosted by Frema Adunyame and Nana Tuffour, Empress Gifty emphasized that divorce should not be viewed negatively. “It was a tough decision. Always going to church and all of a sudden you have to stop, you have to sit home and you have memories…but I had the right people around me,” she said. She stressed the importance of support during such challenging times, adding, “When you divorce and you don’t have the right people around you, you would lose focus. So my mother and my aunty called Mama G were there to support me.”
The award-winning artist further explained her perspective on divorce, noting, “In our world now, when you go into a divorce it’s like a curse, but you see, it’s a transition of life. It’s something bound to happen.”
Empress Gifty has two daughters from her previous marriage, who were just 5 and 3 years old at the time of the divorce. “They are 16 and 14 years now,” she pointed out, reflecting on how time has allowed her to grow from the experience.
Sharing her personal growth as a divorcee, she remarked, “I have learnt how to forgive. I have learnt how not to insult your husband even when you are right. I have learnt how to keep quiet, and I have learnt how to pamper a man because that is all they want.”
Known for her hit songs such as “Aseda,” “Adom,” “Ayeyi,” and “Kamafo,” Empress Gifty is currently making waves with her latest release, “Watch Me,” a track written by Highlife star Kuami Eugene.
