Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson has ignited speculation regarding a potential political career, revealing his intent to delve into the world of politics. In a recent tweet, Blackson stated, “Miss the common people. I’m going to learn all I can about politics so I can help my people one day.”
This announcement follows mounting tensions between Blackson and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government related to an allegedly unsuccessful investment. In a series of posts on X, he detailed his investment in Eurobonds aimed at supporting the long-term operations of the Michael Blackson Academy in Agona Nsaba.
However, Blackson expressed frustration over how government debt restructuring efforts have adversely impacted his investment returns. He commented, “Ghana decided to use our money to pay their debt to China or whoever and leave us hanging.”
Additionally, he criticized the Finance Ministry for presenting bondholders with unfavorable terms, which included either a 37% cut with a 5% interest rate over 11 years or a smaller cut with only a 1.9% interest rate over 15 years.
Despite these financial hurdles, Blackson remains dedicated to the mission of his academy, which provides free education and uniforms to children from kindergarten to Basic 3. Founded three years ago, the Michael Blackson Academy continues to offer vital educational support to the community, even as the comedian navigates challenges in securing sustainable funding.
