GMA Members Seek President’s Removal Amid Galamsey Strike Controversy

A formal petition has been submitted by Dr. Vishnu Nene Limon Abayateye, a member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), calling for the removal of the Association’s President, Dr. Frank Serebour.

The petition, dated October 8, was addressed to the General Secretary of the GMA and outlined serious allegations against Dr. Serebour.

Dr. Abayateye’s action follows Dr. Serebour’s directive to GMA members to continue working despite Organised Labour’s nationwide strike action on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The strike aims to protest illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which poses significant health and environmental risks.

Dr. Abayateye alleges that Dr. Serebour issued a statement on behalf of the GMA without consulting the National Executive Council or the General Assembly.

This unilateral decision has brought the GMA into disrepute, making the association appear inconsistent in the eyes of the public. The GMA had previously taken a strong stance against galamsey.

Dr. Abayateye expressed his intention to move a motion for Dr. Serebour’s removal at the upcoming annual general assembly meeting in Ho. The meeting is scheduled to take place from November 3rd to 10th, 2024.
