Yorkshire County Cricket Club has appointed Anthony McGrath as their new head coach on a five-year deal.
McGrath returns to Headingley, his former playing home, after spending the last nine seasons as assistant coach, head coach, and more recently, director of cricket at Essex County Cricket Club.
McGrath, a former Yorkshire captain and England international, replaces Ottis Gibson, who guided the White Rose to promotion back into County Championship Division One last month.
He will officially take up his new position on November 1.
Sanjay Patel, Yorkshire’s interim chief executive officer, praised McGrath’s achievements during his time at Essex, stating, “During the past nine years with Essex, Anthony has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in English cricket.” Patel highlighted McGrath’s reputation for developing world-class talent and promoting an attacking style of play.

McGrath, 49, played 242 first-class matches for Yorkshire and captained the side between 2008 and 2009. He was a key member of the Yorkshire team that won the County Championship in 2001, ending a 33-year drought.
After retiring as a player in 2012, he served as a coaching consultant for Yorkshire before moving to Essex.
