MP Threatens to Expose Government’s Inaction on Galamsey

Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, the Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Environment, Science, and Technology, has vowed to bring the issue of illegal mining (galamsey) to the forefront of parliamentary debate next week.

In an interview, the MP for Lower Manya Krobo expressed deep concern over the government’s apparent silence on the escalating problem of galamsey

He criticized the government for prioritizing election wins over addressing the environmental crisis.

Terlabi also lamented the repeated delays in passing the Environmental Protection Bill, which would empower the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to effectively regulate environmental activities.

He accused government ministers of obstructing the bill’s passage, likely to protect their vested interests.

The MP’s announcement comes as Parliament prepares to reconvene for its 5th meeting of the 4th session on October 15, 2024.

Terlabi’s intervention is expected to intensify pressure on the government to take decisive action against galamsey and strengthen environmental regulations.
