The National Identification Authority (NIA) workers have declared an industrial strike, effective today, October 7, 2024. This decision was made by the Divisional Executives Council of the Public Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, NIA Division. The strike is a response to the employer’s failure to implement their newly approved scheme of service.
The workers had issued a notice on Sunday, October 6, stating that they would not call off their industrial action until the agreed scheme of service is implemented. This comes after “exhaustive patience and repeated demands” from the workers.
The Scheme of Service (SoS) was approved by the Public Services Commission (PSC) in March 2024, within a record two weeks. The workers consider this document vital for their collective survival and progress.
However, management’s refusal to implement the SoS has been deemed a “blatant betrayal of trust” and a direct attack on the workers’ well-being.
The strike is a decisive action taken by the workers to pressure management into implementing the agreed scheme of service.
The workers emphasize that their decision to strike is not taken lightly but is necessary to protect their rights and interests.
In a statement, the workers expressed their frustration, stating that management’s obstinate refusal to implement the SoS is unacceptable. The industrial action will continue until the scheme of service is fully operationalized.
It’s worth noting that the union had previously postponed an initial strike notice in March 2024, following the intervention of the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.
The strike’s impact on NIA’s operations remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the workers will not back down until their demands are met.
