UN Resident Coordinator Calls for Responsible Mining and Sustainable Development

Charles Abani, the UN Resident Coordinator for Ghana, has emphasized the importance of responsible mining and sustainable development.

He urged all stakeholders to work together for the common good, highlighting the detrimental effects of galamsey, including its negative impact on poverty, livelihoods, the environment, health, water resources, peace, and illicit financial flows.

In a statement released on Saturday, Abani called on protesters to maintain a peaceful and responsible approach and urged the police to uphold professionalism while protecting law and order and respecting human and civil rights.

He also appealed to leaders across various sectors in Ghana to collaborate in addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining.

Abani reaffirmed the UN’s support for actions aligned with the #PactfortheFuture, focusing on sustainability, climate action, environmental protection, and pollution control.

These efforts aim to secure a peaceful and brighter future for current and future generations. The statement concludes with a call for unity and collective ambition to ensure Ghana’s success in overcoming the challenges of illegal mining.
