The Ghanaian government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to combating the illicit mining menace, popularly known as galamsey.

This pledge comes after President Akufo-Addo’s recent meeting with Organised Labour, which was prompted by worker unions’ threats of a nationwide strike.

The strike threat, set for October 10, aimed to pressure the government into taking immediate action against galamsey. The meeting underscored the urgency of addressing this critical issue, which has devastating environmental and socio-economic consequences.

Galamsey’s impact on water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves has sparked widespread concern, prompting the government to intensify its efforts. The government recognizes the need for a multi-faceted approach to tackle this complex problem.

To achieve this, the government is adopting an inclusive strategy, engaging traditional authorities, local communities, environmentalists, and mining companies. This collaborative approach aims to develop sustainable solutions that balance economic development with environmental preservation.

Building trust among stakeholders is crucial, as past interventions have failed due to lack of cooperation and conflicting interests. The government acknowledges the importance of fostering open communication and cooperation.

Through its regulatory agencies, the government is working on reforms to ensure responsible small-scale mining. This includes proper monitoring, licensing, and encouraging responsible mining practices.

The Ministry of Information emphasizes that combating galamsey is a collective responsibility. It urges all stakeholders, including citizens, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations, to participate actively in the fight against illegal mining.

The government’s commitment to eradicating galamsey is unwavering. President Akufo-Addo has demonstrated this resolve by forming a 5-member committee to engage stakeholders and find sustainable solutions.

The committee’s mandate includes engaging with local communities, identifying alternative livelihoods, and developing strategies to prevent reoccurrence. This move demonstrates the government’s willingness to listen and adapt.

The fight against galamsey requires sustained collective action. By collaborating with stakeholders, implementing effective strategies, and promoting responsible mining practices, Ghana can overcome this challenge and ensure a sustainable future for its citizens.
