From her prison cell, Ama Governor has issued a compelling letter expressing solidarity with the ongoing #FreeTheCitizens protest, a movement sparked by social media outcries.
The protest, which began today, is led by Ghanaian youth advocating for the immediate release of Ama Governor and around 50 others who were arrested during a previous demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub against illegal mining, commonly referred to as Galamsey.
In her letter to the protesters, Ama opened with a rallying cry: “Dear Comrades, when I say ‘Aluta!’ you respond ‘Cononua.'”
As a lawyer and activist, Ama highlighted the significance of the day, stating, “Ghana has never seen a day as great as this, 3rd October 2024, when Ghana Youth, in spite of the lines of division planted to subvert the strength in our unity, chooses to pick up camaraderie in marching side-by-side to fight against the devastating effects of illegal mining (Galamsey) on the health, resources, and well-being of the Ghanaian people; demand Government accountability and free political prisoners.”
In a screenshot of her letter shared widely on social media, Ama also referenced Ghana’s first President, the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, expressing that his soul will be smiling down on this day.
The letter has garnered significant attention online, with many netizens praising her resilience as the protest unfolds.
Ama Governor was among 53 demonstrators arrested during the Democracy Hub protest, which police reported escalated into violent clashes at the 37 Intersection in Accra on September 22, 2024. The arrested individuals appeared in court on September 24 and have since been denied bail, with their next court date scheduled for October 8.
