John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made his stance on LGBTQ+ issues clear, pledging to intensify efforts to combat LGBTQ+ activities if elected in the 2024 elections.

Speaking to clergy members in Accra, Mahama emphasized his commitment to strengthening legislation to curb LGBTQ+ influence and practices in Ghana.

Mahama expressed concerns over the delayed passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill under President Akufo-Addo’s administration, citing ongoing legal challenges at the Supreme Court. He firmly stated that his stance on LGBTQ+ issues aligns with his personal faith and values, which are shared by the majority of Ghanaians who oppose LGBTQ+ legalization or normalization.

The former president emphasized that his faith prohibits same-sex marriages, relationships, human-animal relationships, and gender changes. He assured religious leaders that his government would prioritize this issue, ensuring swift enactment of the anti-LGBTQ+ law.

Mahama’s stance has garnered support from some, including traditional leaders and the Christian and Muslim communities, who deem LGBTQ+ practices irreligious and contrary to Ghana’s ethics and standards. However, others, including UN experts, have urged President Akufo-Addo not to sign the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024 into law, citing concerns over discrimination.

Ghana’s LGBTQ+ debate has sparked diverse perspectives, with Mahama’s position aligning with conservative views on gender and sexual issues. His statement received applause from the audience, signaling alignment with those in attendance.

Mahama drew inspiration from Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who signed stringent anti-LGBTQ laws, including the death penalty for ‘aggravated homosexuality.’ He criticized President Akufo-Addo for not taking a decisive stance on this issue.

The NDC flagbearer emphasized the need for parliamentary involvement, urging legislators to contribute to the bill’s passage. He believes a substantial majority opposes LGBTQ+ issues.

Human rights activists are closely monitoring the situation, awaiting the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ bill. Mahama’s commitment to combating LGBTQ+ activities has significant implications for Ghana’s social and political landscape.

The delayed passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill has sparked concerns among some Ghanaians. Mahama’s pledge to prioritize this issue may influence voter decisions in the 2024 elections.

As the debate continues, Ghana’s LGBTQ+ community and supporters remain vigilant, advocating for inclusivity and human rights amidst growing opposition.
