Alan Kyerematen, the presidential candidate of the Movement for Change, has hailed the protesters of the #StopGalamsey and #OccupyJulorbiHouse movements as “the real heroes of Ghana”. These protests, organized by Democracy Hub, aimed to shed light on the devastating effects of illegal small-scale mining, also known as galamsey, on Ghana’s environment, as well as economic hardships and governance issues.

Kyerematen commended Ghana’s youth for their unwavering resolve despite the nation’s economic challenges, particularly the lack of employment opportunities. He praised the arrested protesters, calling them “the heroes of our time” who have endured the country’s hardest times with no jobs and no hope for the future.

In a message of optimism, Kyerematen reassured the youth that there is hope ahead, urging them not to be dismayed or intimidated by fear. He pledged to stand with them, fighting against galamsey and for a peaceful, prosperous, just, and united Ghana that creates a brighter future for all Ghanaians.

The #StopGalamsey and #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests were planned as a three-day event to demand an end to galamsey activities and call for better governance and economic solutions. However, violence erupted on the second day, leading to clashes between protesters and police, and resulting in arrests and charges.

The court has remanded several protesters for two weeks, sparking calls for their release. Kyerematen urged the state to release them quickly and ensure their right to bail is respected.

Galamsey remains a highly debated issue in Ghana, causing severe environmental degradation, including contaminated water bodies and destroyed forest reserves. Kyerematen’s support for the youth-led movement aligns with his vision for a more prosperous and equitable future.

As Ghana approaches the 2024 general election, leaders’ stances on pressing issues like galamsey and youth unemployment will significantly impact the outcome. Kyerematen’s Movement for Change prioritizes addressing these concerns.

Kyerematen’s solidarity with protesters highlights the need for collective action. By addressing galamsey, unemployment, and economic hardships, Ghana can create a brighter future for its citizens. The upcoming election will be crucial in shaping this future.

The protests have sparked nationwide attention, demonstrating the power of youth-led movements in driving change. As Ghana moves forward, leaders must prioritize the concerns of its young people, ensuring their hopes and aspirations are at the forefront of policy decisions.
