The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has praised the Ghanaian media’s crucial role in Ghana’s democracy since the country gained independence from colonial rule.

At the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards on September 28, 2024, he emphasized the media’s vital role in democracy, serving as the cornerstone of truth and accountability.

The ceremony, marking the GJA’s 75th anniversary, was themed “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: The Role of the Media in Democratic Governance and Elections.” As the Special Guest, President Akufo-Addo reassured journalists of their freedom in their duties, even as his presidency concludes.

“The media provides accurate and timely information, empowering citizens to make informed decisions, especially during elections,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“Journalists are the watchdogs who hold power to account, expose corruption, and ensure governments remain transparent and responsive to the people.”

He stressed that a free and independent media is essential to a thriving democracy, and it’s through their tireless work that Ghana continues to build and sustain its democratic foundations.

“I reaffirm my government’s commitment to press freedom, having repealed the Criminal Libel Law and passed the Right to Information Act.These laws empower the media to perform its critical function without fear of persecution” he said.
