Alan Kyerematen, presidential candidate for the Alliance for Revolutionary Change, has condemned the ongoing detention of young protesters from the Democracy Hub demonstrations. Speaking at a press conference on September 29, 2024, at the Ghana International Press Centre, Kyerematen denounced the authorities’ treatment of the protesters as “unlawful and unconstitutional.”
The protests aimed to highlight the government’s failure to address illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. Several young Ghanaians were arrested, sparking widespread concern.
According to Kyerematen, the protesters were exercising their constitutional rights and were unfairly charged with conspiracy and unlawful assembly.
Kyerematen questioned the Ghana Police Service’s handling of the situation, criticizing their decision to supervise the demonstration before bringing charges. “It’s beyond comprehension how this occurred,” Kyerematen emphasized.
The Afrafranto leader criticized the police’s post-arrest treatment, citing denial of access to legal counsel, medical care, food, and water. Kyerematen also targeted the judiciary, questioning the refusal to grant bail to detained youth.

He described the charges as misdemeanors, emphasizing that prolonged detention was unjustified. Kyerematen warned of a growing culture of fear and sycophancy ahead of the December elections.
He pledged solidarity with the youth, lauding them as “heroes of our time” and vowing to fight for their rights and end galamsey.
