Renowned Ghanaian actress Beverly Afaglo has voiced concerns about the alarming rate of substance abuse and promiscuity among today’s youth, commonly referred to as Gen Z.
In an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra (link unavailable), Afaglo expressed her worry about the prevalence of weed smoking, excessive drinking, and casual sex among young individuals.
“The smoking and the drinking is too much,” Afaglo emphasized. “For those of us born in the 80s, when you heard someone smoked, it meant they were troublemakers. Now, the world is exposed, and weed isn’t seen as that bad, but you’re too young to engage in such activities.”
Afaglo, a mother of two and wife of musician Choirmaster, lamented the normalization of destructive behaviors. “It’s become a common lifestyle – smoking, drinking, and renting AirBnB for parties to engage in harmful activities they can’t even recall the next day.”
Furthermore, Afaglo highlighted the concerning decline in awareness and discussion surrounding HIV/AIDS. “I get worried that HIV isn’t loud anymore. Growing up, HIV was constantly on TV – we saw people suffering and losing weight drastically. That fear kept us cautious, but today’s youth understand HIV can be managed, so they’re not bothered.”
Afaglo’s concerns align with findings from The National Institutes of Health’s “Monitoring the Future” survey, which has tracked attitudes and behaviors of young adults since 1975, revealing disturbing patterns in substance use among Americans aged 19-30.
