Real Madrid Fan Faces Prison Sentence for Racist Abuse
- A Real Mallorca supporter sentenced to 12 months imprisonment
- The fan has also been banned from stadiums for three years
- In June, three Valencia fans were sentenced to prison
A Real Mallorca supporter who racially abused Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr and former Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze has been sentenced to a 12-month suspended prison term by a Spanish court.
The fan, who was also banned from stadiums for three years, had his sentence suspended after issuing a written apology to Vinicius and completing anti-discrimination training.
Real Madrid confirmed the news in a statement and reiterated its commitment to combating racism in football.
Another Mallorca supporter, a minor, was also banned from stadiums for a year after directing racist abuse towards Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
The abuse of Vinicius Jr occurred during a La Liga match against Real Mallorca in February 2023. The fan subsequently targeted Chukwueze with racial slurs.
This is the third criminal conviction in recent months related to racist insults towards Real Madrid players, particularly Vinicius, who has been subjected to abuse at stadiums across Spain since his arrival in 2018.
In June, three Valencia fans were sentenced to prison for racially abusing Vinicius at the Mestalla Stadium.
Vinicius has repeatedly called for stronger action to address racism in Spanish football, including urging Spain to be stripped of its 2030 World Cup hosting duties unless significant progress is made.
As Real Madrid prepares to face city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium, concerns remain about the potential for further racist incidents involving Vinicius.
