The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Board Chairman, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has rejected calls for the dissolution of the board. This comes after the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) urged the removal of ECG’s board due to allegations of mismanagement and substantial financial losses.

ACEP cited revenue losses that skyrocketed from GH¢295 million in 2017 to GH¢9.7 billion in 2022 as justification for their stance. However, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that stakeholder engagement, rather than board dismissal, is key to the company’s efficient operation.

Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for reforms, inclusive of all stakeholders, to address the challenges facing ECG. He believes that blaming the public or the company is counterproductive and instead advocates for collaborative problem-solving.

The ECG Board Chairman’s response came during the appointment of David Asamoah as the acting Managing Director. This followed the resignation of Samuel Dubik Mahama, whose departure sparked concerns about the company’s stability.

Afenyo-Markin assured that the change in leadership will not disrupt power supply. He confirmed that the board has management’s support and is committed to providing uninterrupted essential services to Ghanaians.

“The entire system of the company is in place, and the company will continue to provide the essential services that it provides for Ghanaians and the country,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

Afenyo-Markin’s approach prioritizes stakeholder engagement and reforms. He recognizes the need for transparency, accountability, and collaboration to drive ECG’s growth.

The ECG Board Chairman’s vision aligns with Ghana’s broader energy sector goals. As the country aims to become a regional energy hub, transforming ECG is crucial for economic development.

Afenyo-Markin’s leadership will be instrumental in shaping Ghana’s energy sector. His resolve to build a more efficient and reliable power distributor has resonated with many Ghanaians.

With his diverse background as a businessman, lawyer, and lawmaker, Afenyo-Markin is well-positioned to tackle ECG’s multifaceted challenges. His leadership will be critical in determining the company’s success and Ghana’s energy sector development.
