Mahama: I’m Holding On to Our 8-Year Legacy, NPP Can’t Break It

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has confidently declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be able to break the 8-year electoral cycle. Speaking during his campaign tour at Kokompe in Accra on Friday, September 27, Mahama said, “The eight they say they will break is with me, I’m holding on to it firmly, let them break it and let me see.”

Mahama’s statement comes after the NDC picked the number 8 slot on the ballot paper during the Electoral Commission’s balloting exercise on September 20. The exercise, which was initially met with disagreements among party representatives, ultimately ended successfully after over an hour.

The NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured the number one spot on the ballot paper for the December 7, 2024 polls. Other parties secured the following positions: Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP) at number 2, Ghana National Party (GNP) at number 3, Ghana Union Movement at number 4, and Liberal Party of Ghana at number 5.

The National Democratic Party (NDP) took the number 6 spot, while the Convention People’s Party (CPP) secured number 7. All People’s Congress (APC) will be at number 9, and John Mahama’s NDC will be at number 8.

Independent presidential candidates also received their positions: Alan Kyerematen secured the 13th position, Nana Kwame Bediako took number 12, Kofi Koranteng will be at number 10, and George Twum Barimah picked number 11.

Mahama had earlier expressed excitement about securing the number 8 position on the ballot paper. His latest statement suggests he’s determined to hold onto it.

The NPP’s desire to break the 8-year cycle has been a recurring theme in their campaign. However, Mahama’s assertion implies that the NDC is poised to maintain its position.

As the December 7 polls approach, tensions between the NDC and NPP are expected to rise. Mahama’s statement serves as a rallying cry for NDC supporters.
