Renowned Ghanaian actor, Adjetey Anang, has underscored the pivotal role of storytelling in tackling societal issues, including the scourge of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.
In an interview with Accra-based 3FM, Anang emphasized the influence of creatives in shaping public discourse. “We’ve mastered the art of integrating these issues into the stories we tell. If you pay attention to our productions, you’ll notice that we subtly insert references to pressing issues like galamsey.”
Anang explained that storytelling allows audiences to enjoy entertainment while acknowledging serious problems. “That’s where we should make our voices heard—not just by hitting the streets, but through our work.”
While advocating for the creative industry’s role in addressing galamsey, Anang also expressed support for lawful demonstrations on crucial matters. His remarks come on the heels of a recent three-day protest organized by Democracy Hub on September 17.
The protest aimed to pressure the government to take decisive action against galamsey, which is causing severe environmental degradation to water bodies and forests. However, the demonstration took a tumultuous turn, resulting in the arrest and detention of approximately 40 protesters for alleged offenses.
