Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has unveiled plans to support youth in mining communities with small-scale mining setup loans if the NPP wins the upcoming elections. This initiative aims to ensure miners adopt international best practices to protect the environment and water bodies ¹ ².
Speaking at a mini rally in the Odotobri Constituency, a mining district in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Prempeh emphasized that many individuals involved in illegal mining, or “galamsey,” lack the financial resources to follow proper mining practices. He noted that foreigners, including Chinese and Indians, often take advantage of this, pushing them to mine illegally and then purchasing the gold ¹.
Dr. Prempeh explained that the government will offer loans to miners and buy gold from them directly, eliminating the need to sell to foreigners in the local market. This approach will enable the government to raise funds for the country’s day-to-day operations ¹.
The project’s primary objective is to manage Ghana’s mineral resources to benefit the people and stimulate economic growth without compromising the environment. Dr. Prempeh assured that the NPP’s vision, led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is to foster responsible mining practices while assisting small-scale mining companies to grow into larger enterprises ¹ ².
To achieve this, the government plans to establish community mining schemes in abandoned shafts and explore new mining sites, creating jobs and wealth for citizens. Dr. Prempeh also highlighted the importance of transitioning small-scale miners towards responsible practices, which will lead to wealth creation and environmental conservation ¹ ².
The NPP aims to collaborate with the private sector to establish a Minerals Development Bank, supporting the mining industry. This bank will provide access to financing for equipment acquisition and capacity building, enabling small-scale miners to adopt best practices.
Dr. Prempeh emphasized that the project will benefit mining communities financially, leading to development and job creation. Traditional leaders, known as Nananom, will also receive their fair share.
The initiative is expected to create jobs and reduce unemployment in mining communities. By promoting responsible mining practices, the government hopes to conserve the environment and water bodies.
Dr. Prempeh’s proposal has been well-received by the mining communities, who see it as a viable solution to their financial struggles. The NPP’s commitment to responsible mining practices has been consistently emphasized by Dr. Prempeh.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s plan to support small-scale mining in Ghana has the potential to transform the industry, promote environmental conservation, and create economic opportunities for mining communities.
