Kofi Okyere Darko, a prominent media figure and fashion icon known as KOD, has expressed concerns regarding the lack of adequate funding for Ghana’s creative arts sector. Speaking at the recent 3Entertainment Creative Arts Forum, he highlighted how insufficient financial support hampers the production of films and other creative projects.
KOD emphasized the importance of securing additional funds from both private and government sources to stimulate growth in the industry. “The major challenge facing the creative industry or the orange economy in this country is that of funding. If we are able to put some funds into what we do, I think it will elevate it to the next level,” he stated.
He noted the decline in Ghana’s film production, questioning why the industry struggles compared to its past successes. “People are asking why Ghana is not producing movies like we did back in the day; executive producers are struggling. So if there’s funding from the private sector, working hand-in-hand with the government, we are definitely going to propel what we do to greater height,” KOD added.
His remarks resonated with fellow industry figures, including veteran actress Akorfa Edjeani, who has also criticized the insufficient financial support for the nation’s film sector. She pointed out the stark contrast in funding between sports and the creative arts, questioning why significant investments are directed towards sports while the film industry remains underfunded.
Akorfa urged leaders to recognize the broader impact of the creative arts, stating that it extends beyond mere entertainment. “The creative industry plays a vital role in education, information, and cultural reorientation,” she emphasized.
