The National Identification Authority (NIA) is set to begin registering minors aged 6-14 for the Ghana Card starting October 7, 2024. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing effort to ensure every citizen is included in the national identification system .
To make the registration process convenient and accessible, the NIA will conduct the first phase in schools across selected districts. By targeting schools, the NIA aims to streamline the process, making it easier for parents and guardians to register their children.
Alfred Gazari, Deputy Director of Operations at the NIA, emphasized the significance of this registration. He noted that incorporating children into the national database is crucial for achieving comprehensive identification for all Ghanaians. Gazari explained that registering children between 6-14 years is part of the plan to register every Ghanaian in the country.
The NIA has already made significant progress in registering Ghanaians. According to Gazari, the authority has registered individuals over 15 years old and has started registering children from zero to five years old. This current phase is the last step in registering all Ghanaians, including those outside the country.
Gazari stressed that the Ghana Card is essential for meaningful transactions and interactions in the country. He emphasized that everyone needs the card, highlighting its importance in everyday life.
The Ghana Card registration process is designed to be inclusive and accessible. To qualify for registration, individuals typically need to provide identification documents such as an SSNIT ID Card, Tax Identification Number, Driver’s License, Voter ID Card, or NHIS Card.

The NIA has also introduced mobile registration and card issuance services for institutions, organizations, households, and individuals. This service is available for a minimum of seven Ghanaians.
In addition to the mobile registration service, the NIA has made significant strides in clearing the backlog of Ghana Card production. The authority recently printed 541,529 Ghana Cards in its database within ten days.
The Ghana Card is issued free of charge to Ghanaians in the first instance. However, institutions and families may incur costs for appointment-based registrations.
The NIA’s efforts to register minors and expand national identification coverage align with its mandate to advance economic, political, and social activities in Ghana .
