A tense standoff has unfolded between Ghanaian police and residents of Ada, Magazine, Aboabo, Wawase, and Nkurakan. The confrontation began when locals blocked the main Koforidua-Nkurakan road to protest its deplorable condition.
On Thursday morning, residents clad in red and black attire took to the streets to demonstrate against the delayed completion of the Koforidua-Nkurakan main road. The protest caused significant disruption, with many commuters left stranded.
Demonstrators used tires, logs, and wooden boxes to block the road, preventing vehicular movement. The protest highlighted the dire need for infrastructure improvements in the region.
According to protesters, over 10 lives have been lost due to accidents on the stretch, including a student and Okada riders. These incidents, they believe, could have been prevented with better road conditions.
The demonstration was led by four assembly members from Ada, Aboabo, Magazine, and Nkurakan, along with Adukrom Akwadum chief Nana Asiedu Oduro. They demanded swift action from the government.
The protesters issued a two-week ultimatum to the government, warning of further action if the contractor fails to return to the site and complete the project.
“Construction began on this road in 2019, and it’s still not completed,” said a protest leader. “We’re suffering, and we give the contractor and the government two weeks to come to our aid.”
