Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.
The French international made the decision after suffering a knee injury on his debut for Italian side Como.
Varane, who began his career at French club Lens before joining Real Madrid in 2011, enjoyed a trophy-laden career, winning 18 trophies with the Spanish giants, including three La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.
He later moved to Manchester United in 2021, where he won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
The defender also represented France at the international level, winning the World Cup in 2018 and the Nations League in 2021
In recent years, Varane had been vocal about the dangers of heading the ball, admitting to playing with concussion in the past.
Varane will remain with Como in a non-playing role.
