Akufo-Addo Calls for UN Security Council Overhaul, Citing Africa’s Underrepresentation

President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana is calling for major changes within the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the need for a fairer global governance system.

Speaking at the UN Summit on the Future of the World, he stressed that the current Security Council setup is outdated, failing to reflect today’s global realities.

Akufo-Addo pointed out that Africa, with its 1.4 billion people, is severely underrepresented, making it impossible to claim true multilateralism.

He urged for bold reforms, ensuring every nation, regardless of size or wealth, has an equal voice.

This isn’t the first time a leader has pushed for UN reforms.

Historically, leaders like John F. Kennedy have advocated for cooperation and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Kennedy’s 1963 address to the United Nations General Assembly highlighted the importance of working together to achieve peace and disarmament.

Akufo-Addo’s appeal comes ahead of his final address to the United Nations General Assembly, where he’s expected to discuss pressing issues like climate change and recent global developments.

His message echoes the sentiments of many who seek a more inclusive and equitable global governance structure.
