Ghana Card Helps Eliminate Ghost Names from Government Payroll

Story Highlights
  • It has saved 44,000 ghost national service personnel
  • This will freeze salaries of government workers without a Ghana/ECOWAS Citizens Card
  • Dr. Bawumia's administration aims to achieve a corruption-free payroll system

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, has reaffirmed his commitment to tackling the issue of ghost names on the government payroll.

During his recent tour in Bawjiase, he emphasized that the payroll database is undergoing continuous scrutiny to prevent unauthorized individuals from benefiting from government resources.

The government’s digitalization agenda has been instrumental in combating corruption, particularly in eliminating ghost names from the SSNIT and National Service Scheme payrolls.

With the help of the Ghana Card, they identified 29,000 ghost names on the SSNIT payroll, saving 400,000 cedis, and 44,000 ghost national service personnel, resulting in savings of over 300 million Ghana cedis.

Dr. Bawumia’s administration aims to achieve a corruption-free payroll system. To achieve this, the government has integrated the databases of the Mechanised Payroll System and the National Identification Authority, enabling real-time biometric validation to verify government workers’ salaries.

This move will freeze salaries of government workers without a Ghana/ECOWAS Citizens Card starting March 2024.

Key Achievements:

  • 29,000 ghost names removed from SSNIT payroll, saving 400,000 cedis
  • 44,000 ghost national service personnel removed, saving over 300 million Ghana cedis
  • Integration of payroll and national identification databases for real-time biometric validation

Next Steps:
The Controller and Accountant General’s Department will continue to work with the National Identification Authority to ensure the payroll system’s integrity.

Public sector workers and CAP 30 pensioners are urged to acquire their Ghana Card to avoid any inconvenience
